Improvements to Backwell’s Station Road

A major £250,000 road safety and improvement scheme will start on Station Road, Backwell on Monday 30 July.

Programmed during the school holiday to minimise disruption, the scheme will include road resurfacing, safety improvements, new speed limits and traffic signal refurbishment.

The works are being carried out in conjunction with Backwell Parish Council to improve safety for pedestrians and motorists through the village including those travelling to and from nearby infant and secondary schools.

The new speed limits include a 20mph limit on a length of Station Road, and a 30mph limit on a length of Backwell Common which will be introduced in conjunction with speed cushions and raised tables.

New road markings and signs, improved bus stop access and informal crossing facilities will also be introduced.

The four-week scheme, which is due to be finished by Friday 24 August, will be completed between 8.30am and 4pm Monday to Friday starting on Monday 30 July. Temporary traffic lights will be used for the first and fourth weeks.

A road closure during the same working hours will be used for the two weeks beginning Monday 6 and Monday 13 August. The diversion route will be via Nailsea, Wraxall, Cambridge Batch and vice versa.

Cllr Elfan Ap Rees, North Somerset Council’s executive member with responsibility for roads said: “This is a major scheme that will improve road safety in Backwell as well as completing other highway improvements at the same time.

“We appreciate that the temporary road closure during working hours may cause some inconvenience but the long-term benefits to the local area will outweigh this.”
