Rodney Road / Taylor Wimpey Site – Update from Backwell Parish Council

Following residents’ concerns over the last few days, Backwell Parish Council (BPC) contacted both Taylor Wimpey (TW) and North Somerset Council (NSC) to request further information. Here’s the update we’ve received: Grass Cutting The land was previously under a grazing licence with a local farmer. Prior to completion taking place, TW were advised that the landowner/tenant wished to cut the grass one last time. This took place last week and unfortunately, it appears a tree was damaged during the cut. TW does not anticipate any further grass cutting until the new access from Rodney Road is in place. Site Access & Works TW held a site meeting recently to assess enabling works, including fencing and an archaeological survey. Access was made via the gate next to West Leigh Infants School – the same entrance used by the farmer, and a permitted right of way to access the land. As of [...]

Mac Mic Strategic Land Public Exhibition – Land North of Farleigh Road (East Backwell) Thursday 17th July 2025 11:30am – 8:30pm Backwell Parish Hall Mac Mic Strategic Land is holding a public exhibition to present proposals for around 450 new homes, public open space, new facilities, and infrastructure on land north of Farleigh Road (East Backwell). This site is being considered for development in the latest draft of North Somerset Council’s new Local Plan. Backwell Parish Council has been informed of these intentions by Mac Mic Strategic Land and understands that invitation letters will be sent to residents shortly. We want to be clear: Backwell Parish Council opposes development in East Backwell and is committed to safeguarding the area. BPC has made this position clear to Mac Mic Strategic Land. The exhibition is part of an early-stage pre-proposal consultation – not a formal opportunity to object, but an important chance [...]

North Somerset Council Local Plan

This week, North Somerset Council (NSC) announced their proposed additional sites for the next iteration of the draft Local Plan: 🔗 View the announcement and documents here  The Government has allocated approximately 24,000 houses to North Somerset, requiring the identification of additional housing sites. NSC has designated Backwell and Nailsea as strategic locations for growth.  The lack of an up-to-date NSC Local Plan, combined with a shortfall in the 5-Year Land Supply due to developer land banking, is attracting speculative applications from multiple companies. As a result, Backwell is under unprecedented pressure. 📈 Residents will be aware that 794 homes have already been approved, including: Two Farleigh Fields sites Rodney Road Grove Farm This represents a 40% increase in the village’s population, with no confirmed funding for essential services or infrastructure. If the additional sites at East Backwell are realised, the population increase over the next 10 years could reach 118% [...]
