Planning
Overview
Part of the regular work of our Parish council is informing and contributing to North Somerset Council’s planning system.
In addition we respond to consultations relating to major proposals in and around our Parish. For example, we try to influence and inform the North Somerset Council Local Plan 2041, Bus Services Improvement Plan and Bristol International Airport expansion. We can influence other organisations such as North Somerset Council or local Members of Parliament.
While we provide comments, North Somerset Council is the Planning Authority and makes the final decisions. Our role is to bring local knowledge and community perspective to the planning process.
Updates on Current Planning Work
Backwell Parish Council continuously reviews local planning applications and engages with developers where possible to achieve the best outcomes for the community.
Below is a brief overview of current planning applications being monitored by the council. Updates are added regularly; check back for the latest information. If you have any questions, please contact us for more information.
What the Parish Council Does Regarding Planning
Monthly Planning Committee Meetings:
The Planning Committee meets monthly to review planning applications affecting the village and agree on comments to submit.
Submitting Comments:
All comments are formally submitted to North Somerset Council and are publicly available on the North Somerset Planning Portal. While we cannot decide the outcome of applications, our aim is to ensure local insights guide decisions that benefit the village.
Monitoring Developments:
With the support or our councillors we keep an eye on local developments and report any unauthorised work or planning breaches to North Somerset Council. This helps protect the village’s character and addresses potential safety concerns promptly. Nevertheless you can report any development you believe does not meet or keep to planning rules directly to North Somerset on their website and they will investigate.
Backwell’s Neighbourhood Plan
Our Neighbourhood Plan was created in 2014 and it is now time to review and update the Plan. Backwell Parish Council are undertaking this review with support from specialist consultants, Backwell Residents Association and other interested Backwell residents /and local groups. Follow our progress and share your ideas as we review and update our Neighbourhood Plan!
