Following residents’ concerns over the last few days, Backwell Parish Council (BPC) contacted both Taylor Wimpey (TW) and North Somerset Council (NSC) to request further information. Here’s the update we’ve received:

Grass Cutting

The land was previously under a grazing licence with a local farmer. Prior to completion taking place, TW were advised that the landowner/tenant wished to cut the grass one last time. This took place last week and unfortunately, it appears a tree was damaged during the cut. TW does not anticipate any further grass cutting until the new access from Rodney Road is in place.

Site Access & Works

TW held a site meeting recently to assess enabling works, including fencing and an archaeological survey. Access was made via the gate next to West Leigh Infants School – the same entrance used by the farmer, and a permitted right of way to access the land.

As of 8th July, there will be a number of vehicles entering the site through this access as the fencing starts to be installed. School opening hours will be avoided. Three deliveries are expected over three days, and TW is in contact with the schools to coordinate.

When construction begins, an access point will be created near the Scout Hut, and once in place, the gate next to West Leigh will no longer be used. The new access is a priority and is expected to be completed during the summer holidays.

No Access from Grove Farm

TW currently has no right of access from Grove Farm, and there are several physical constraints (trees, hedgerows, drainage ditches) that prevent this route from being used.

A Note from BPC

As local residents ourselves, we understand the sadness over the loss of this much-loved land. However, planning permission has been granted by NSC for 60 new homes, and that decision cannot be reversed. BPC remains committed to doing everything we can to ensure this development proceeds in the safest and smoothest way possible for our community. We are actively engaging with all involved parties to protect and support our residents.

We will provide updates on this website and/or our Facebook page as soon as additional details are received.

In the meantime, residents who have questions or concerns are encouraged to contact NSC or Taylor Wimpey directly. If you choose to do so, you may wish to copy BPC into your correspondence. We also recommend including District Councillors Thomas Daw and Annemieke Waite to ensure that local representatives are fully informed.

BPC is very grateful to the community for its ongoing engagement and support.
