We are very proud to have excellent schools in the village who have been awarded ‘OUTSTANDING’ by OFSTED. This has been achieved not only by the hard work of the teachers, but also the pupils.
The three state schools in the area are: Backwell School, Backwell Junior School and West Leigh Infants School (see below).
Backwell Secondary School
Following a recent Ofsted inspection, Backwell School and its Sixth Form have been judged ‘Outstanding’. It was the first secondary school in North Somerset to have been awarded such a grade, which is the highest possible. In 2018 and 2019 it was rated the best secondary school in North Somerset, based on GCSE results.
Backwell C of E Junior School
Backwell Church of England Junior School is located 6 miles south of Bristol. We are a voluntary controlled junior school with nearly 240 pupils aged 7 to 11 and is rated one of the best primary schools in Somerset.
The school is positioned close to the local church, allowing us to work in close partnership to provide an education of the highest quality within the context of Christian belief and practice.
Backwell C of E Junior School is friendly and welcoming, caring greatly for the needs of both our pupils and staff. We have earned the Investors in People mark and have recently been awarded Healthy Schools Status.

West Leigh Infants School
The school was opened in 1969 having been built as an open plan school. Building works over the Summer of 2003 and 2005 resulted in substantially enhanced classroom accommodation.
There are four remodelled classrooms and two new classrooms, one of which is being used as a stimulating library. The school has a large hall with modern P.E equipment. It has pleasant grounds including a small field and a millennium flower garden made with the help of the parents and children. There is a school kitchen, which provides hot lunches for the children.
